Setup guides / Lodestar Voice / Grandstream HT812

Set up your Grandstream HT812 for UK calling

Connect an ordinary home phone to Lodestar Voice. Set up your number, UK ringing and caller display, the correct clock, and dialling that sends the call about one second after your last digit.

For the original HT812. Menu names checked on hardware V3.0A with firmware 1.0.31.1. The newer HT812 V2 has a different interface.

Before you begin

Have your equipment and account details ready

You need an active Lodestar Voice account enabled by Lodestar for HT812 encrypted audio, the SIP username and SIP password supplied by Lodestar, an HT812, its power supply, an Ethernet cable, and an analogue phone or cordless phone base. A cordless handset connects through its base; it does not register directly to the HT812.

All numbers and addresses shown are examples. The example phone number is 02477753247, with SIP username 442477753247. Use your own details. Your adapter's address will usually be different from the example 192.168.1.20.

What this connection encrypts. TLS protects SIP registration and call signalling. SRTP protects call audio between your HT812 and Lodestar. Both must be configured as shown in this guide. Calls can continue through other telephone networks, so this does not promise encryption all the way to the person you call.

Use the firmware approved for your device and account. Older firmware may need an approved update or trusted-certificate update for server verification. Calls, including emergency calls, stop if power or internet fails. No emergency backup is included.

Step 1

Connect the adapter and your phone

  1. Connect the HT812's WAN or Internet socket to a spare LAN socket on your broadband router using Ethernet.
  2. Connect your analogue phone, or the base of your cordless phone, to PHONE 1 on the HT812. Use the correct telephone cable or UK telephone adapter for your phone.
  3. Connect the HT812 power supply. Give it time to start and obtain an address from your router.

The HT812 uses your existing internet connection. Keep the phone connected to PHONE 1 throughout this guide. PHONE 2 is a separate line and is not configured by these steps.

Step 2

Find the adapter and sign in

  1. Find the HT812 in your router's connected-device list. Alternatively, lift the attached phone, dial ***, wait for the voice menu, then dial 02 to hear its WAN IP address. Hang up afterwards.
  2. Connect your computer or phone to the same home network. Enter the adapter's address into your browser, for example http://192.168.1.20. Use HTTPS if it has been configured on your adapter.
  3. Sign in with the administrator login supplied with your device. Your adapter login is separate from your Lodestar SIP password.
  4. Open STATUS and check that Product Model says HT812.

These steps use PROFILE 2, assigned to FXS Port 1. FXS means the telephone socket. The profile holds the shared connection settings; the FXS port holds your individual phone number and password. Always make the profile and port assignment match.

Step 3

Enter the Lodestar connection in PROFILE 2

Open PROFILE 2 at the top of the page. Use these settings:

Profile Active
Yes
Primary SIP Server
voice.lodestarnetworks.co.uk:5061
Outbound Proxy
voice.lodestarnetworks.co.uk:5061
Failover SIP Server and Backup Outbound Proxy
Leave blank unless Lodestar has supplied alternatives.
SIP Transport
TLS
SIP URI Scheme When Using TLS
sips
SIP Registration
Yes
Register Expiration
60 minutes.
Local SIP Port
6061 for Profile 2. This is the adapter's own port. The Lodestar server port is 5061, as entered above.
NAT Traversal
No for this Lodestar profile. Leave STUN unconfigured.
Authenticate server certificate domain
Yes is recommended, to check that the certificate belongs to the server you entered.
Authenticate server certificate chain
Yes is recommended, to check the certificate's trusted issuer.
SRTP Mode
Enabled and forced. This requires encrypted audio rather than allowing an unencrypted fallback.
Crypto Life Time
Disabled. This omits the optional SRTP key lifetime for compatibility with this Lodestar setup.
Enable Call Features
Yes. Use the ordinary Yes option so the individual feature switches below apply.
SRTP Feature
No
SRTP per call Feature
No

The two SRTP Feature switches control handset star-code overrides. Setting them to No keeps those overrides from changing your encryption setting. SRTP itself remains enabled by SRTP Mode: Enabled and forced.

Type the server name exactly. Do not add http:// or https://. Specifying :5061 makes the TLS destination explicit; the adapter may also select it automatically when TLS is chosen.

Keep certificate checks enabled for verified TLS. A wrong clock or an outdated trusted-certificate list can prevent registration. If that happens, check Step 6 and ask Lodestar for the approved firmware or certificate update.

If ADVANCED SETTINGS shows minimum and maximum TLS versions, use TLS 1.2 for both on this original HT812. Leave the SIP TLS client certificate and private-key boxes empty unless Lodestar specifically provides a client certificate.

Select Update to save this page before moving to the next tab. Leave the other connection options at their defaults unless Lodestar has supplied different instructions.

Step 4

Put your own number on FXS Port 1

Open FXS PORTS. In the row for Port 1, enter:

SIP User ID
Your full Lodestar SIP username. For the example number 02477753247, enter 442477753247.
Authenticate ID
The same SIP username again.
Password
Your private Lodestar SIP password, copied exactly. Do not use the adapter's administrator password.
Name
Your display name, for example Lodestar Voice.
Profile ID
Profile 2
Hunting Group
None for a single phone line.
Request URI Routing ID
Leave blank.
Enable Port
Yes

Use the full username beginning 44, with no plus sign or spaces. For a UK number, remove the first 0 and add 44. Keep the area code digits in both ID fields.

Leave Offhook Auto-dial empty so lifting the handset gives you a normal dial tone. Select Update. Do not change Port 2 if another service uses it.

Step 5

Choose UK caller ID and ringing

Return to PROFILE 2 and scroll down to the telephone and audio settings:

SLIC Setting
UK. This selects the electrical line settings for a UK analogue phone.
Caller ID Scheme
SIN 227 - BT for a standard UK BT-compatible phone.
Ring Frequency
25Hz
Enable Hook Flash
Yes
Hook Flash Timing
Minimum 80, maximum 200 milliseconds for a standard UK handset with a 100 ms timed-break Recall key. This is a compatible timing window for that handset type; check your phone manual if it uses another recall time.
Preferred DTMF method, Priority 1
RFC2833. This sends keypad presses to telephone menus.
DTMF Payload Type
101
Disable DTMF Negotiation
No
Preferred Vocoder, choice 1
PCMA, also called G.711 A-law. Keep PCMU available as another choice.
Voice Frames per TX
2 for the PCMA setting above.

Imported phones can use a different caller-ID scheme. If your phone rings but does not show the caller's number, check the phone's manual before choosing another scheme. An older UK phone that does not ring may need a suitable BT-to-RJ11 adapter with the ringing components required by that phone.

Select Update before leaving the page.

Step 6

Set London time and familiar UK tones

Open BASIC SETTINGS. Set Time Zone to GMT (London, Great Britain) and Allow DHCP server to set Time Zone to No. The London selection changes automatically between GMT in winter and BST in summer. Leave Self-Defined Time Zone unused when London is selected. Select Update.

Open ADVANCED SETTINGS. Set NTP Server to pool.ntp.org. To keep this chosen server, set Allow DHCP Option 42 to override NTP server to No. Your adapter needs working internet and DNS to set its clock.

On the same page, copy the following strings into the matching tone boxes. Keep every comma, slash, minus sign and final semicolon. The frequencies and timing follow the UK tone pattern; the volume levels below are the values used for this setup.

UK ringing and call progress tones
FieldValue to copy
System Ring Cadencec=400/200-400/2000;
Dial Tonef1=350@-17,f2=440@-17,c=0/0;
Ringback Tonef1=400@-17,f2=450@-17,c=400/200-400/2000;
Busy Tonef1=400@-17,c=375/375;
Reorder Tonef1=400@-17,c=400/350-225/525;
Call Waiting Tonef1=400@-13,c=100/4000;
Prompt Tonef1=350@-17,f2=440@-17,c=0/0;

The ringing cadence gives the familiar UK double ring. Ringback is the tone the caller hears while waiting for an answer. Reorder is the network congestion tone. Select Update.

Step 7

Use UK numbers and a one-second dial timeout

Open PROFILE 2 again. Find the dialling settings and enter:

No Key Entry Timeout
1 second.
Early Dial
No
Dial Plan Prefix
Leave blank.
Use # as Dial Key
Yes
Disable # as Redial Key
No

Copy this entire line into Dial Plan, including the braces and the backslash before the plus sign:

{ x+ | \+x+ | *x+ | *xx*x+ }

This is the permissive plan used by the current profile. It accepts complete numbers, short service codes and supported star codes without adding a US-style prefix or changing what you dial. It is not a list of included or chargeable destinations. Your account determines which calls are available.

The one-second setting is a pause after the last digit. A pause of about a second while you are still dialling can send an unfinished number. If you dial slowly, use 3 or 4 seconds instead, or finish dialling with # to send immediately. Do not append T1 to the plan.

How to dial from a UK phone
Call typeWhat to dial
Ordinary UK landlineThe full number, including its area code and leading 0, even for a local call. For example, 02477753247.
UK mobileThe full number beginning 07.
International call00, then the country code and the destination number without its national trunk prefix where applicable. Availability and charges depend on your plan.
Short service codeDial the code directly. Do not put 44 or an area code before it.

Star codes can be handled by the adapter's local call features or by your provider. Use only the feature codes Lodestar has given you. Select Update.

Step 8

Apply your settings and test both directions

  1. Check that each page you changed has been saved with Update. Select Apply to activate the saved configuration. If the adapter asks for a reboot, wait until nobody is using the phone, reboot and allow it to reconnect.
  2. Open STATUS. Under Port Status, FXS 1 should show your own SIP User ID and Registered. Your handset must still be plugged into PHONE 1.
  3. Make an outgoing call to an ordinary number you control, such as your mobile. Answer and check that both people can hear each other. Check that the call starts about one second after you stop dialling. Normal plan charges may apply.
  4. Call your Lodestar number from your mobile. Check the intended phone rings with the UK pattern, answer, and check the sound in both directions. Check caller display if your phone supports it.
  5. Try the keypad on an ordinary automated service you normally use. If menu choices are not recognised, recheck RFC2833 and payload 101.

Check both security settings after saving. SIP Transport must remain TLS and SRTP Mode must remain Enabled and forced. A Registered status alone does not prove audio encryption. Contact Lodestar with the time of a test call if you need confirmation of its negotiated media.

Do not call 999, 112 or 111 to test your setup. Confirm your registered emergency address with Lodestar and read the power and emergency-calling information.

If something does not work

Check these common causes

FXS 1 does not say Registered

Check that Port 1 is enabled and assigned to Profile 2, that the server settings were entered in PROFILE 2, and that SIP User ID and Authenticate ID both use your full assigned username. Re-enter your SIP password carefully. Check TLS, the server's port 5061, internet access, the clock and the trusted-certificate list. A certificate error needs the clock or trust configuration fixed; ask Lodestar for help while keeping certificate checks enabled.

The call is sent before I finish dialling

Increase No Key Entry Timeout from 1 to 3 or 4 seconds. The timer measures the gap between digits. You can still press # after the complete number to send it immediately.

The phone does not ring or show caller ID

Check PHONE 1, Enable Port Yes, SLIC UK, SIN 227 - BT and Ring Frequency 25Hz. Check do-not-disturb on the handset and adapter. If it is an older BT phone, check whether its cable or UK adapter supplies the required ringing connection. Imported phones may need a different caller-ID scheme.

The phone has US tones or the wrong time

Recheck the strings in Step 6, the London time-zone selection and both DHCP override settings. Save each page, Apply and reboot if requested. Automatic provisioning can restore older settings; if your changes keep disappearing, contact Lodestar about the device's provisioned configuration.

There is no sound or sound works in only one direction

Recheck TLS, SRTP Mode Enabled and forced, and Crypto Life Time Disabled. Confirm that Lodestar has enabled HT812 encrypted audio on your account. Recheck the codec and network settings, then contact Lodestar with the time and direction of the call and which side could hear audio. Keep the required encryption settings while we investigate.

Email hello@lodestarnetworks.co.uk with your model, firmware version, the affected port, registration message and the time of any failed call. Do not send your SIP password.

Manufacturer and UK references

See the original HT812 and HT814 administration guide and HT81x user guide. Grandstream refers to the ITU national tone list for country tones. The ETSI analogue-line reference includes UK ringing characteristics, and the BT Freestyle 2500 guide describes the standard 100 ms recall time. Use the Lodestar account settings in this guide alongside those equipment references.

Guide updated 1 November 2026. Based on the original HT812's active Profile 2 and Phone Port 1 layout, with TLS and required SRTP. Recommended certificate verification and UK settings are shown explicitly; your existing values may differ.
